All This Is That

By Michael deMartin

Quick note to thank Peter for his post below and for the excerpt from his great new book "Catch a Wave: The Rise, Fall and Redemption of the Beach Boys' Brian Wilson." I just finished it this weekend, and I think it's the one book you need to have that documents Brian's life and music. There are a few stories in there I never heard that had me laughing out loud - it's a great, great read. Also, if you've ever been to the website http://www.ultimatecharts.com, they have a poll on the top albums of all-time and Pet Sounds is at #1 (right ahead of the Beatles' Revolver, Michael Jackson's Thriller and Elvis' Elvis Presley. Also wild is that Brian's own SMiLE is #13. Pretty cool to say the least.

Not a typical blog response I suspect, but here goes...Just wanted to say a huge thanks and to say how much I enjoyed reading CAW. I got through it in more or less one session, broken only by having to make more coffee.

It was good to read a more balanced account of the well known BW stories. More revealing were the stories surrounding the Imagination album, Brian's subsequent return as a live performer and Darian & Melinda's involvement in having Brian's music honoured in the way it has been. It certainly makes watching the 'Beautiful Dreamer' documentary more poignant. (Van Dyke Park's comment in BD about 'a band member having an issue with the lyrics of Surf's Up is given greater potency knowing who said what exactly!).

I'm rambling here. You done Brian, the Beach Boys and all that their music has involved and touched a great service with your book. Like a certain other great Bea- band, knowing that Brian and the BBs were all human and fallable only serves to throw their music into even greater wonder. Thank you!
